Biographical account of

Shri T.U. Mehta

Born on December 12, 1917 at Wankaner, a small township in Saurashtra. It was the capital of one of the princely States which enjoyed full administrative jurisdiction of the State.

 

Education of the youngsters of such States was controlled by Bombay University which, in those days, covered the present States of Gujarat, Maharashtra and the modern province of Sind of Pakistan. He was graduated from St. Xevier’s College of Bombay securing Honours in Economics. Thereafter, he was also graduated in law ranking highest in the whole university in the subject of jurisprudence securing “Dara Shetna jurisprudence” prize.

 

He thereafter joined Bombay School of Economics & Politics and attended all semesters for post gradation study but could not appear in final examination as he had already started his legal practice at Rajkot in the year 1942. (Marriage 1940 to Yashu).

 

After the end of British suzerainty and the establishment of the High Court in Saurashtra, he was firmly established as leading constitutional lawyer in Saurashtra.

 

During this career, he was one of the front-rank in political activists leading some labour unions formed by the then socialist party of India under the influence of leaders like J.P. Narayan & Ashok Mehta.

 

In the year 1954, he was directly recruited as a confirmed District & Sessions Judge on advanced pay-scale. He was selected as a judicial member of “All India Income Tax Tribunal” the highest appellate authority in tax matters in India, in the year 1968 and within a short period of one year (1969), he was elevated as a judge of the High Court of Gujarat. In the year 1976 during emergency imposed by Indira administration policy of transfer of High Court judges was adopted for the first time. Under this policy, he was transferred as a judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh-Shimla where he was elevated as Chief Justice in the year 1977 and finally retired in December, 1979 on completion of the retirement age of 62 years as provided by the Constitution of India. He resumed his legal practice as a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India at Delhi.

 

In the month of December 1993, he left Delhi to settle at his house in Ahmedabad. For about two years thereafter, he continued his practice at the Supreme Court and completely retired from all types of professional work in 1995-1996.

 

After settling at Ahmedabad, he has taken lively interest in all issues of public interest. For about 16 years, he worked as the President of B.N.P. Sangh – an organization for rural upliftment established about 46 years ago by Jain Saint Santbalji and took leading part in many other public institutions.

 

T.U. Mehta left this world at the age of 101 in his home in Voorhees, NJ with his youngest son and wife, Jayesh & Uma Mehta.
